Trout and Grayling Fly Fishing: Excursions

We offer a variety of trout and grayling fly fishing excursion packages

Local Lakes

Several of our local lakes are located in spectacular mountain scenery, real wilderness surrounded by forest and tundra - places where reindeer, moose, wolverine, deer and lynx can be found. In the main, the lakes we fish on are small to medium size between five and fifty acres, containing good numbers of brown trout. To fish them, a belly boat (float tube) is almost essential and we have tubes here at the lodge for hire.

The fish are wild and beautiful, ranging in size from a few ounces to several pounds but the most typical size is between a half and one and a half pounds. In some of the lakes char are present and they can be big – into the several pounds category. Trips can be for a single day or several days.

Wilderness tours can be arranged whereby we go on horseback into the national park fishing virtually virgin waters.

Fora

In the Fora ValleyOur local river for trout is Fora, a wild mountain stream that runs through truly spectacular mountain scenery. In its upper reaches, the Fora opens out into steady pools interspersed with fast streamy runs. This is tundra country and it is very beautiful.

Fishing on Fora is a magical experience. We can cook wild trout on the bank, make coffee over the fire and travel into the wilderness where the only sounds you will hear are birdsong and water tumbling over stone.

Checking a fly on the ForaThe fish don’t run big on Fora but they are very, very beautiful, wild and plentiful. It was on upper Fora that we recently took Trout and Salmon writer, Jon Beer. Jon loved the place and wrote a feature about his experiences in Trout and Salmon.

Fora is a great place to learn to fly fish – it is narrow, easy to fish and the trout respond well to dry flies and nymphs. If you have children it is a perfect place to spend a day and teach them to fish along with your guide.

Glomma

Spring Fishing ther GlommaThe Glomma or ‘shining river’ shot to fame in the eighties and nineties when legendary angler Hans van Klinken achieved catches of big grayling and branded it the ‘best grayling river in Europe.’ Sadly, in the intervening years, excessive fishing pressure from visiting anglers has resulted in too many fish being killed and many of the big fish are long since gone.

Recently, we have just discovered a new zone on Glomma where the fishing is fly only and catch and release. The area is eighteen kilometres long and very, very beautiful. The new management policy has already led to a huge increase in the numbers and size of the fish and in this area the Glomma is slowly but steadily returning to its former glory.

Grayling are prolific here with lots of fish around the pound mark and individuals going to over three pounds. The fishing for grayling is relatively easy and the fish love dry flies. A good angler on a  decent day will catch more than twenty fish in truly spectacular surroundings.

Also present are brown trout. Fish range from just a few ounces up to ten pounds or more and whilst the big fish are not easy to catch they are present in increasing numbers. Streamer flies often account for the ginats but big grayling fall to these tactics too.

Our Glomma clients will stay in a beautiful cabin complete with superb facilities including its own sauna and located just a stone’s throw from the water’s edge. For fly fishermen, this is a real paradise and the fishing is fantastic. Our local guide is real expert on the river. Fishing from mid-May until mid-October.

Folla River
River Folla

Folla and Grimsa

These two wild upland rivers flow through some of the most spectacular terrain imaginable – with mountains, forests and wild tundra as a backdrop. Located in an anonymous valley around two hours  from Winsnes, guests can stay in the area overnight or, if they prefer go for a long day out and return to the lodge.

The fishing on these rivers is for trout and grayling. The latter average over a pound with fish going to over three pounds while the trout range in size from a few ounces to several pounds. Three pound browns are caught on these rivers every week.

Fishing is with dry fly and nymph and our local guide, Brjornar, is an excellent fisherman with many of his own fly patterns to imitate the local insect population. Fishing on Grimsa and Folla is from mid-April through to mid-September.

River Rena
River Rena

Rena

The queen of the south, Rena is a tributary of Glomma, famous for having the largest caddis population in Norway. Fed by lake Storsjoen Rena is special because its water temperature is constant, remaining at a perfect level even in mid-July. The insect hatches on Rena are legendary – it has every species of fly you could possibly want from large danica mayflies through stoneflies, sedges, olives in various species and terrestrials such as hawthorn flies and flying ants.

A beautiful, wide river, Rena contains some very big fish and our guests fish a re fly only zone where catch and release is the rule. Many of the biggest fish in the river live on the fly only beat.

Rena’s grayling are big, they start at around one and a quarter to one and a half pounds and two to three pound fish are quite common. Huge grayling between three and over four ponds are caught every year on this river and the trout go to large sizes too, with double figure fish caught on fly every year.

Rena is a real fly fisherman’s river and though it is prolific it is technical. Casting can be tricky and matching the hatch is essential to success. Not a river for novices, this is a river that every true fly fisherman should aspire to fishing.

Our guests on Rena stay in a small basic cabin in the most beautiful forest surroundings. Moose roam the surrounding area and bears and wolves are also present. The cabin is located right next to the river – a fisherman’s paradise if ever there was one!
Fishing is from Mid-May until late October.
