Jonas

This fly was tied after being shown a fly with a brown wing and blue throat by Jonas Hammerstedt, one of the most famous guides on Gaula. I didn’t tie my fly exactly the same but since it was inspired by Jonas I named it after him. This fly has been really, really good.

  • Body: copper tinsel or plain brass tube
Body hackle: palmered fiery brown cock (none on plain brass tube)
Rib: round silver tinsel (none on Plain tube)
Tag (optional): either yellow or red Anton yarn
Throat hackle: orange schlappen or soft hen under fluorescent blue guinea fowl or grizzly blue cock.
Wing: orange templedog followed by light golden brown followed by rusty brown followed by dark brown. Between each wing layer copper and root beer angel hair (sparse) and combed into wing. Strands of mirage down flanks.
Cheeks: jungle cock, either dyed orange or plain.

Green Highlander Tube

This is a modern tying of a classic fly. The most popular tying of the green highlander for Gaula is with the black overwing rather than the brown in the traditional. This version features a guideline turbo cone with bird fur front hackle and a tungsten cone hidden underneath the wing. It is tied on Guideline 'Fits' Tubing. The hidden cone is best for early season deep fishing - later in the year you can omit the hidden tube if you want the fly to fish high in the water. The turbo cone is also optional.
