Salmon Fishing: New for 2009
The most important news is that we have opened two extra rooms at Winsnes. Both are on the upper floor and feature private bathroom with shower. The largest, Kroken, is a family room with plenty of room for up to four people.
We have also purcahsed to float tubes and trout fishing outfits for our guests. They are especially useful for those who come to fish for trout and not salmon or for salmon fishers as an alternative if conditions take a huge nosedive.
Extreme Salmon Fishing on the Fora River
During 2006, Matt Hayes and Jakob Winsnes spent some time exploring another of Gaula’s tributaries, the Fora River. Located in a deep gorge, Fora is a rough, tumbling mountain river with some holding pools that are interspersed with a long stretches of boulder-strewn ‘pocket’ water. It gets a good run of salmon, with fish to over fifteen kilos (thirty pounds), the average size being similar to Gaula. ‘Being in the Fora valley is like stepping into Jurassic park’ says Matt ‘it is an amazing place.’
Fishing on Fora demands a good level of fitness because the water is difficult to get to
and involves some climbing and a lot of walking on steep slopes. Once in the river valley, hopefuls scramble over boulders
to reach the pools.
For safety reasons we insist that all trips to Fora are fully guided but those who are up for it are in for a treat. The valley is simply stunning and the waterfall at the head of the river is a great place to see and photograph leaping salmon.
Fishing
is with fly, worm and spinner and guests have the option to stay overnight in a small cabin located in the valley. Campfire
cooking and coffee are guaranteed – an experience that the more adventurous will not want to miss!
New for 2008 – Salmon Safari
The salmon safari is an exciting new product for 2008, allowing our guests to fish not only on the Gaula but also on one of the other famous rivers that enters the Trondheim Fjord – the Verdal. Guests fish both rivers for three days before moving on to the next.
Both Verdal and Gaula contain big salmon and the lodge on Verdal, Tingvoll, is superb. Perhaps the greatest benefit of this package is that if one of the rivers is not fishing well, the others may well be. In early June, for example, fishing on Gaula can be very unpredictable but it is almost always good on Verdal.
