Salmon Fishing on the Gaula

Salmon Fly Fishing: Fishing the Gaula

Salmon Fly Fishing on Flaskholen and the Malum Winsnes Fishing Area

Fishing takes place on the Gaula River and our guests enjoy some of the best fly water the river has to offer. There are two fishing beats adjacent to the Lodge, both of which offer the cream of Gaua fishing.

Malum Winsnes

Malum Winsnes fishing area consists of four pools and produces a five year average of around 150 salmon per season. Malum Winsnes is currently part of the GFF, Gaula Fly Fishing Friends fishery. GFF has nine other pools in addition to the Malum Winsnes pools but such is the standard of the malum Winsnes beat that it produces around half of the total yield of GFF salmon. While GFF has thirteen pools it is heavily fished by 24 anglers, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Nonetheless, those whom like to fish hard and cast to a high standard come back to the GFF rotation year after year.

Flaskholen

Flaskholen is immediately upstream of Malum Winsnes and consists of four beats. The water runs from the new bridge above the lodge down to the upper boundary of Malum Winsnes. This fishing area is exclusive to Winsnes fishing Lodge Guests. The management of the river is more exclusive - fishing is limited to just six guests per week and the river has a daily resting period to allow the pools to recover.

Flaskholen is arguably the most exclusive fly fishing on Gaula. Its five year average catch is slightly higher than Malum Winsnes in terms of numbers of salmon caught. It slightly more expensive than Malum Winsnes but will certainly suit anglers whom do not wish to fish relentlessly and are slightly more modest in their fishing abilities. The resting system will almost certainly make it easier for non-expert anglers to catch fish.

Rotation Fishing

Rotation fishing is exclusive, allowing visitors to fish in pairs on some of the best water on the whole river and not to have to worry about other anglers. There are a few pools on the GFF water where there are occasionally anglers on the far bank but on Flaskholen this does not happen.

On both fisheries, anglers fish in pairs, moving to another pool every few hours. On GFF, anglers fish a new pool every six hours and fishing is 24 hours per day. The popular pools get fished incessantly.

On Flaskholen there are four beats and anglers fish three of them every day. Fishing starts at midnight until six, from six until midday and then the river is closed until dinner time. Dinner is served at six and anglers go to their third pool of the day which will have been rested for six hours or more.

On GFF, the fishing commences on Sunday afternoon but guests should note that international flights often dictate that fishing cannot realistically start until Sunday evening. fISHING ON malum Winsnes goes through to the following Sunday.

On Flaskholen, guests arrive on Sunday afternoon, receive an orientation tour and have dinner. After dinner, equipment is assembled and checked and guests have a drink in the Lax pub until midnight. Fishing commences at midnight on water that has been rested for a minimum of six hours but possibly more. Fishing then continues except for the daily rest period until midnight the following Sunday.
